Despite its reputation for graft, corruption, murder and all manner of immoral behavior New Orleans is really quite a spiritual place. It is Heaven and Hell. We recently had a close brush with the End Times (Katrina).

Broad Street, near Canal, has both Central Lockup (prison) and the Heavenly House of Style. The area flooded deeply after Katrina and many of the Divine businesses in the area are struggling or closed. This bodes ill for the Heaven/Hell balance in the area. But Judge Eloie is gone from the courthouse, too, so Hell has lost a big local booster.

Final Destination. The End. The Last Stop. Another member of the End Times business group on Broad Street, New Orleans.

Is it any coincidence that these businesses are near Central Lockup, where the Condemned bide their time?

There is a set of businesses within a two block stretch of Broad Street that all refer to spiritual matters–at least that’s how I saw it one recent Sunday morning. In fact, they all refer one way or another to the End Times.
This one refers to The Underworld–hell. (Of course some might contend it refers to gangsters–or even underwear–or even gangsters’ underwear. But I prefer to see it as part of an esoteric group of businesses catering to the Final Journey of a man–or mankind.)

See the next post, and the next.

Happy house on Louisiana

This caused me to stop on a dime. The photo hardly does justice to the living color. It is so bright that it changes the color of the house next door–it just glows in a sort of radioactive way. On Louisiana Street just off of Broad.

Tuxedo Consultant

Tuxedo Consultant

I had dropped Cathy off at RHINO and decided to take a rambling drive home. It was a recent Sunday morning. Not too many cars on the street, so easy to make snap decisions to pull over and take a pic. This was somewhere on Galvez, I think, near Deutches Haus. I like the whole idea of a home-grown, street-level tuxedo consultant. Cuts right through any pretension. And as far as I can know Mr. Durand might be–or have been–this is post-Katrina New Orleans where are lot of things are past-tense now–a very knowledgeable judge of sartorial matters. This is a pretty down-and-out part of town, if you didn’t know. I especially like the execution of the drawings as well as what they depict: Cane, bowtie, gloves and hat. Maybe I should go buy that seersucker suit I’ve been thinking about. They’re on sale in August!
